Although
the Villa itself is in the quiet hillside, Nerja is
only a few minutes drive away. It is now the biggest
resort of the Costa del Sol to the east of Malaga
but was once a small fishing village. There are numerous
attractions to suit all ages.
The old centre of the town retains its original charm
and there are plenty of bars and restaurants.
Nerja is probably most famous for its caves which
were discovered in 1959 and, although visitors are
welcome, some parts are still closed to the public
in order to protect and preserve them. It is estimated
that they were inhabited between 20,000 and 1,800
BC.
Eating out
At the villa you will find a list of our favourite
bars and restaurants that we recommend you try. All
of them are very good indeed but, as with most places
in the world, you get what you pay for! The lower
the price, the more basic the menu and, probably,
the smaller the portions. The beach restaurants at
Burriana are also very good but do get very busy in
the peak season.
We especially recommend you visit Ayo's who cooks
paella on an open fire. Ayo's claim to fame is that
he discovered the caves at Nerja as a youngster and
they are well worth a visit. On Sunday, he also cooks
roast pork (cerdo) with vegetables, a very popular
and enjoyable dish. You can keep going back as many
times as you like to have your plate refilled.
Shopping
The Spanish have a very different lifestyle from ours,
both in the summer and winter months. Don't expect
too many shops to be open before 10 o'clock in the
morning, and expect them to shut at 2 o'clock in the
afternoon. Most will reopen from 5 or 6 o'clock and
stay open until 9 or 10 pm.
There are lots of interesting shops in town but, for
most of your everyday supplies, we recommend you use
the Supersol Supermarket which is situated near the
roundabout at the bottom of the hill. Just keep going
straight on at that roundabout and you then come to
the entrance to the underground car parking which
can get very busy during the morning and evening periods.
However, this shop is usually open for the whole day.
NB: You will need a €1 coin for the trolley!
Malaga
Malaga is the capital city
of the Costa del Sol. It is a bustling city with excellent
shops and a thriving nightlife. It boasts many beautiful
sights. Pablo Picasso was born in the city and his
house and the museum which is dedicated to him, are
amongst many popular tourist attractions.
Narrow streets are crammed with Tapas bars and wine
shops which come alive at the weekend with families
going out to enjoy the vibrant nightlife.
